ADAC trailer tire test: how do the brands in our range perform?

ADAC trailer tire test: how do the brands in our range perform?

This spring, the German roadside assistance organization ADAC conducted its first comprehensive test of trailer tires in the size 185 R14C. These tires are commonly used on trailers and caravans and are essential for safe and stable driving. The tires were evaluated on o.a. braking distance on dry roads, grip and stability in wet conditions, cornering aquaplaning, rolling resistance, and durability.

The test results reveal clear differences, but also confirm that there are strong options within our own range of trailer tires. At Protempo, we supply tires from Linglong, GT Radial and Security: three brands that were also included in this test. We have summarized the key findings for you below. At the end of this article, you will find a link to the original article on the ADAC website, including an overview of the testing methodology and the final score scale (the lower the score, the better).

Linglong Radial R701: excels in efficiency and braking performance

Linglong finishes in a strong second place in the ADAC test, with a final score of 2.3 (good).

Advantages:

  • Excellent rolling resistance: this means lower fuel consumption for the towing vehicle;
  • Very good braking performance on dry roads, providing extra safety when heavily loaded.

Note: In extremely wet conditions, the R701 performs slightly less than the very best, but still remains well within the “good” category.

GT Radial Kargomax ST-6000: solid and reliable

GT Radial tyre 185 R14C Kargomax ST-6000 M+S TL

GT Radial achieves a final score of 2.7 (sufficient) and therefore falls into the “satisfactory” category.

Advantages:

  • Good braking performance on dry roads, providing confidence in daily use.
  • Solid performance under normal conditions.

Note: On wet roads, the tyre lags somewhat behind the top performers in the test.

Security TR 603: lightweight with strong braking performance

Security results in a final score of 2.8 (sufficient).

Advantages:

  • Strong in dry braking – a crucial feature for heavier trailers.
  • Low own weight, making this tire an attractive option for trailers where every kilogram counts.

Note: On wet roads and during aquaplaning, this tire performs slightly less well, which prevented it from finishing at the top.

Conclusion: three brands, each with their own strengths

The ADAC test shows that the differences between tire brands can be significant. However, within our range at Protempo, we can proudly say that Linglong, GT Radial and Security perform well in the test, each with their own advantages.

Test methodology

  • Brake tests: mounted on the front axle of a VW Polo and tested at 100 km/h.

  • Aquaplaning: measured laterally and in corners on wet test tracks with a constant water flow and increasing speed.

  • Rolling resistance: on a test bench, pressure set to 4.5 bar.
  • Durability test (endurance run): conducted at maximum load and varying pressure levels, 100 km/h for an extended period.
